I'm trying to confirm this but I'm told West Bound Business Rt. 50 has been shut down due to an accident. It has been confirmed. Find another way home Folks.

UPDATE: Tha accident has been cleared up and the road is open.

How Could We Have Been Left In The Dark For So Long?

I want you to think about this for a minute........

Before Salisbury News came along, did the masses of you know so much crime was going on? NO! Everyone was pretty much clueless about any spills from the WWTP. No one knew about people going door to door stealing money for magazines from you. No one was aware of the Graffiti, the Gangs, the list goes on and on.

That being said, who's left you in the dark for so long? Was it the Mayor? Was/is it the Chief of Police? Was it the Daily Times and other news sources?

All I can tell you is, Salisbury News is exposing all sorts of things no one had heard of before and it's no wonder the Daily Times is starting to look and sound more like Salisbury News these days, they have no choice because they're failing.

I get remarks almost daily about how WBOC & WMDT and nothing short of a televised Salisbury News for local news every evening but they read about it here first. Look, I can't expect to get everyone and their brother coming here to this Blog but where I will take credit is the fact that these other sources of news media are starting to expose these things never told before.

Nowadays it's a big deal when the WWTP has another spill. 3 years ago, who knew? Who cared? Anyhow, I can tell you that "I" did NOT receive any Press Release about vehicles having parts stolen off of them and quite frankly, you should be ticked off at that. If they keep you in the dark, the crime just continues.

Look at it like this. If "I" see some SOB in a Parking Lot with a saws all, I'm going after that SOB and or calling the Police immediately and so will you now. If the Chief of the Police Department can't manage crime locally and report it because his stats would go through the roof, we'll do it for him, just like I did when all the graffiti was going on in Downtown Salisbury.

It's time to demand our local Officials TELL US WHAT'S GOING ON! If we need to pack our bags and relocate because crime is too much to raise a child in this City, damn it, you pay enough taxes to be told the TRUTH! We should also know so we can pack our businesses and move elsewhere as well. Crime is out of control here and Chief Webster needs to let us know by releasing ALL of the crime locally.

Until then, keep bringing on the Lawsuits against me Police Chief Webster and Mayor Barrie Tilghman! If Salisbury News has to be the only reliable source for REALITY, then so be it.

Employees At Verizon On Mt. Hermon Road Get Nailed!

You know how we've all been hearing about people stealing copper and all sorts of metal anywhere and everywhere possible? GET THIS!

An Employee of Verizon got off work yesterday and went to their care and started it up. Immediately they knew something was seriously wrong as the EXHAUST was extremely loud and just not right. It certainly didn't sound like it did when they got to work.

Nevertheless, someone stole their catalytic converter off their exhaust system, RIGHT THERE IN THE VERIZON PARKING LOT!

Yep, all the kind of stuff you're NOT hearing about in the Daily Times, yet you're getting it here first on Salisbury News. The cool part is, you will be hearing about it because we've grown so much that everyone else doesn't have a choice but to keep up with us as Salisbury News is setting the bar when it comes to what's going on locally.

Businesses and Parking Lots are going to need to step up security, even if it means policing the lots every 30 minutes on your own. Remember Folks, GET TAG NUMBERS!

UPDATE: It happened at Outback last night too!

Former City Of Salisbury Firefighter David Merritt Speaks Out

"Ok enough is enough.

In regards to everyone wanting to know what is going on with me, here it is. My doctors have informed me that my chances of ever returning back to work as a firefighter - paramedic are minimal to none per a letter dated July 11 2008 (Dr. Jeng). I will be with the City of Salisbury Fire Department for 18 years the end of this month, if anyone thought that on August 2 2007 that I decided to take a year off that is bullsh*t.

Everyone who knows me always knew that I was either teaching or working somewhere that has now come to a end. The injury that I sustained was due to a cable that broke from the inside out. The truth of the matter is the truck was a pos when the city got it but we got it several volunteers such as Assistant Chief Sheldon White had a low profile Sutphen that would have probably fit into old 16 but the administration would not go for it.

This is the reason that jacks were installed in the basement to help hold truck 16. The city had engineers come in and install them they loaded the jacks with the truck in the building when it left they fell down.

In regards to Princess Anne yes I am the Assistant Chief, The Fire Chief knows what is going on with me and I have asked that if he wants me to step down I have no issue with that but he has stated no. I have been told that I can not ride or drive a fire truck or a ambulance which I have not done there are many times that I am out and I may respond to the scene. Most of the time I am there either doing fire reports or working on other projects, my gear has dust on it my fire gloves have been given to another firefighter. So do you think I am fighting fire NO!

As to those who think that it is a IWIF scam it is not trust me I would love to be back with the fire department. But it appears that there are several individuals that must be jealous. I do not care what you think, I am looking out for my family they are number 1 and I do mean number 1. To those of my brother firemen and firewomen who have stood beside me I greatly appreciate it you are my true friends.

In closing I do not care what anyone thinks but you need to read section 7 of the City Employees handbook and pay attention to it. My days of being a firefighter-paramedic are now over and with that it also means that my days of being on the special operations team is also over, as being one of the original members of the team I wish them the best and I hope that everyone stays safe and can return home to their families at the end of their tour. I do not wish what I am presently going through on anyone and yes I do mean anyone.

David Merritt"

False Alarm On The Downtown Plaza

Fortunately a worker inside a building on the Plaza set off the alarm in their building. What I found most interesting however is, Station 16 has decent Staffing during the day but fall way short at night, when most of their calls come in. There's usually only 3 Firefighters per vehicle assigned/scheduled in the evening? Sleep tight Folks!

In Memory Of Irena Sendler

There recently was a death of a 98 year old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ulterior motive...

She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews. Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box she carried, and she carried in the back of her truck a Burlap sack, (for larger kids). She also had a dog in the back, that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, and arms, and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out, and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it, and reunited the family. Most of course had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes, or adopted.

Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize. She LOST..... Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.

CITY OF SALISBURY, MARYLAND SPECIAL MEETING -- JULY 7, 2008

The City Council convened in a special meeting at 4:00 p.m. in Conference Room 305 of the Government Office Building for the purpose of conducting a hearing on a claim for a refund on a water bill by Canal Woods II Condominium. A copy of the material provided to Council for the hearing is attached and made a part of the minutes. Since Council President Smith recused herself from discussion, Council Vice President Comegys presided over the meeting.

Internal Services Director Pam Oland presented Canal Woods II Condominium’s request for a refund on their water bills of $1,383.20 and recommended that a refund not be granted because there was no documented reason for the increased usages. Mr. Bradshaw and Mr. Simpson distributed two additional handouts to the Council for their review (copies attached to the minutes). According to Mr. Bradshaw and Mr. Simpson, there were no new tenants during that time period nor did they have any knowledge of leaks or plumbing problems.

After considering all the issues, the Council found they could not support the request for a refund. Mrs. Oland was requested by Council to verify the handwritten meter reading and when the last time the meter was checked out.

With no further business, the special meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m

New Anchor At WMDT Was Refused Access To A Public Meeting Because She's Black?

Last Wednesday evening Ms. Amber Watson of WMDT attempted to go into a PUBLIC MEETING in Crisfield referencing their Cable TV issues at a City Council Meeting. After driving all that way she was told the meeting was closed to the Public.

This was the first report I received on this matter. Then this morning I came to learn that only after the two top managers of WMDT raised hell about what had happened, the Mayor of Crisfield responded by stating the meeting was to full and she couldn't fit into the room.

On the evening that it happened I happened to be speaking with one of the Reporters at WMDT and they were in awe of the situation. My immediate response was, this Reporter is new, right? Yes. I said, please don't tell me she's black, is she? Yes!

We're talking about Somerset County Folks. If you didn't know the answer of what I'm about to tell you, this is going to blow you away! In the 400+ year history of Somerset County, there has never been a black person on the County Council, NEVER! Do you happen to know what the ratio of blacks verses whites are in Somerset County? It's 73% black verses white.

You tell me what happened that evening? IMO, it's time for some change in Somerset County and it's time everyone support such a change. The Mayor of Crisfield has been summoned to a meeting with upper management at WMDT because they will NOT stand for such crap and Joe Albero supports their efforts 100%! The Mayor is back stepping every way humanly possible because he knows they're in deep sh!t right now.

This is 2008, NOT 1956!

Chevy Chase Bank Closing

delmarvanow reported today on Chevy Chase Bank is closing all 50+ of their GIANT Food Store locations, leaving area members in the lurch.

I don't think they did their home work, though. A quick call to a Chevy Chase service rep informed me that the Salisbury branch (among a few others) will be remaining open indefinitely until a suitable alternative can be provided for this region's banking customers.

They may build a standalone branch somewhere locally. No plans have been announced.
But what has been announced is that they WON'T be closing the Salisbury branch. And that CRUCIAL fact wasn't reported in the delmarvanow news story.

GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE

Joe:

You site is getting noticeably better. When I pulled it up to read this morning it is truly astonishing. It is not just that I'm a strong advocate of SBY news but because the coverage is so 'in touch' with what is actually going on verses the contrived views that our politicos would have you believe.

On another note, I saw Granddad's article in today's edition and I'll gladly email the Maryland Comptroller's spreadsheets to Granddad. It will have to be in at least 4 or 5 emails because the excel file is so large that his server will probably reject it if I send it in one email. I don't even know who Granddad is but he seems like a knowledgeable guy.

Looks as though the stock market is going to tank this morning . . .Dow Futures are down over 100 points. . (Fannie Mae/Freddy Mac) concerns. . . but SBY news already has it covered. IF IT IS A RECORD LOSS TODAY PLEASE BE SURE TO INFORM THE PUBLIC THAT THEY READ IT FIRST ON SBYNEWS.COM AND NOT THE DAILY TIMES. THE ECONOMY REALLY IS A TRAIN WRECK!

6,000 Posts & Growing

We are only a day or two away from reaching 6,000 Posts on this Blog. That's quite a bit of articles, not including the year or more we were away from Blogger.

Nevertheless, I am receiving so many e-mail messages thanking us for what we do and encouraging us to keep up the good work. That's always refreshing and rewarding, thank you.

Comments are also going through the roof and I have to admit, you guys are keeping me really busy! It's all good though because it simply shows the success of this Blog and how interactive it is.

The idea of creating this Blog was to do everything possible to keep you informed and hope one day that everyone would start recognizing all that stuff I had been saying for the past 3 years was really true and that you had been blind sided by this Administration.

When things really started to turn around was when other local MSM sources started following what I/We were doing and saying and actually finding it credible. I'll never forget the Mayor telling the Press that the reason she was suing me was because people were actually starting to listen and believe me. ROTFLMAO! HELLO!

Without being too long winded, THANK YOU!

An E-Mail From Ireland

An email from Ireland to all of their brethren in the States...a point to ponder despite your political affiliation:

'We, in Ireland, can't figure out why you people are even bothering to hold an election in the United States.

On one side, you had a pants wearing female lawyer, married to another lawyer who can't seem to keep his pants on, who just lost a long and heated primary against a lawyer, who goes to the wrong church, who is married to yet another lawyer, who doesn't even like the country her husband wants to run !

Now...On the other side, you have a nice old war hero whose name starts with the appropriate 'Mc' terminology, married to a good looking younger woman who owns a beer distributorship!

What in God's name are ya lads thinkin over in the colonies !

Question of the Day, Fri 7/11

(Not so much lately, thankfully) there have been headlines regarding day care centers. Charges including physical abuse, abandonment, sex abuse, neglect, accidental overdoses, even death.

The summer is here. Kids are out of school.

Do your kids attend a day care center or summer camp? Where? Are you happy with the arrangements? With the poor economy, is it a struggle to afford daycare?

Are you fortunate enough to stay home with them or have a trusted family member babysit?

Have you ever had to pull your child from a day care facility because there was evidence of neglect or abuse? If it was your child, were you able to bring your child some justice?

Salisbury's Infrastructure Is Crumbling

Erosion is yet another problem plaguing the Salisbury area. If you don't do it right the first time, this is what happens, right Mr. Comegys?

Comment from another post makes a good point

Believe me when I say that I fully understand that there are many more properties for sale on the market now than normal. I also fully understand that that a house on the market now will likely stay on the market for a year or more, depending on the cost. But I commend the commentor who made the following comment and encourage them to provide the spreadsheet he/she described. It is good to have as much information as possible so that people can form a more educated opinion on the matter. The comment went like this:

"First off I want to meet the guy who writes the check in the amount of $15,250.00 for an impact fee.(And yes you are right on target for the proposed amount)The reason being, I think the man or woman should be submitted immediately for a complete psychological evaluation. I don't care if it is Mr. Ruark, Causey, Centex, Americraft, Glass, Ryan, or old Joe Blow homeowner. What is most confounding. . . I guess our elected leaders have never heard of trickle-down economics - (Ronald Reagan). What they have done with enactment of these exorbitant fees have actually reduced the revenue stream into the county coffers by raising an economic barrier that thwarts construction. If you examine the sales tax revenues for lumber and millwork you will see that it has been dramatically reduced as a result of enactment of the impact fees. Thus, the enactment has been counter-productive. Bottom line. . . the enactment of impact fees has actually caused a reduction in sales tax revenues which exceeds the money generated from the impact fees. You can easily verify these sales tax collection figures by contacting the Maryland Comptroller's office.I've got the spreadsheet for Wicomico and it is stunning."

I don't see where people are buying fewer houses than pre 9/11. We became so accustomed to the "fat" times that came about as a result of the incredibly low interest rates which were imposed too rapidly in attempts to stimulate the economy after 9/11, that we forgot where we came from as a nation. Now we have so many new and vacant houses on the market that perspective buyers can be extremely picky.......it's a buyers market after all. Think about it. There are more and more people growing up, starting families, and looking for houses of their own. There will always be people looking for houses. Now, however, with fuel prices through the roof, people are looking to save money anywhere they can. If counties and municipalities are creating impact fees which are too high, the people will buy elsewhere.......and the counties/municipalities are cutting off their proverbial noses to spite their faces. Unless, of course, the ulterior motive is to slow growth in certain areas. It's gonna take some time for everything gets back to some degree of normalcy. Until it does, we must make certain that our local govts. weigh carefully both sides of the impact such fees have on our community. If what the commentor says is true, these fees are more of a "cash right now " type of decision, rather than one which will benefit the communities in the future.

Walmart Scam

Mr. Albero,

I read your blog daily and I thought sharing this story with you might be a good way to warn others about a danger at Walmart North.
I was loading groceries in my van at Walmart north at about 9:15pm last night (Wednesday, dark and rainy). I was parked next to a cart return and I was putting groceries into the side door of my van. As I was putting the bags in a man came up to the cart at the rear of my car and told me a sob story about the police taking his car because he hadn't paid a ticket for $6.60. Now he was stranded and needed to get back to Dover where he lived. I informed him that I was unable to help him (feeling very glad that I had the cart between us and my van on one side and the cart return on the other). He then said that he only needed a little money for the bus to Dover. I told him I had no money. He left, walking toward the entrance.
Well, I was nervous so I called my husband as soon as I got in the car and locked the doors. As I was telling him the story, he knew what the guy looked like (black man, maybe in his 40s). Last week the same man approached him in the parking lot, told him that his truck was broken down and he needed a ride to the bus station to get home to Dover. This freaked me out even more. This man must be doing this a lot for my husband and I to both get hit. What I worried about is some naive young person who would consent to giving him a ride. What would he do?
It concerned me so much that I called the police and reported it. They said that someone would check into it.
I wanted others to know to be careful. I rarely go out alone at night. I'll do it even less frequently now!

Thanks for listening

OMINOUS SIGNS ON THE HORIZON FOR FANNIE MAE/FREDDY MAC

My Question Of The Day

Look, the economy flat out sucks, we all know that. Tax bills are coming in and people are being blown away by the new increases and what many don't know is, they're phased in over three years. The being said, each year you'll have the same increase as you just received, for three years! Gas prices are going through the roof and there's even the scare that gas will go as high as $7.00 per gallon over the next few years. The price of health insurance has gone almost to the point where most can't afford that either. Grocery prices are just a joke and what I'd like to know, since there's the option of anonymous comments on this Blog, in which I, nor anyone else can tell who you are, I think it's important for everyone to hear just how many of you can't take it any more? How many of you are worried about losing everything?

You see, our Government doesn't want a question like this being spread around. I say, screw the rest of the Country and the AP Reports that come out in the Daily Times that say one day new home sales are on the rise and the next day they say they're down 20%! Let's all work together on this Post and let's see just how bad things are right here on the Eastern Shore.

This could even relate to Family members that are struggling too. Let's see how bad things really are, without hearing what the MSM WANTS YOU TO HEAR!

Royal Farms Is Finally Coming To West Salisbury

There's finally some activity at the property on the South side of Rt. 50 in West Salisbury near the Bypass. For years their sign has stated they'll be coming in Fall of 2006, then 2007 and now it says Coming Soon. I've been watching construction equipment show up on the Site and it looks like something just might happen in the very near future.

I happen to think this is one of the most ideal locations I have seen yet for one of their Stores. All that traffic coming back from Ocean City heading West will certainly bring them a ton of business.

Sorry BUDdy, You Got It All Wrong

While perusing Blognetnews of Md. web page I noticed a post from the ole No BS Zone on Andy Harris being the highest rated Senator from Md. by Progressive Maryland in 2007. As the name infers it deals with progressive issues and it typically rates Democrats higher than Republicans on a scoring system.

"The two highest-priority votes, indicated at the top of the scorecard, are double-weighted, while the other six votes are single-weighted. A vote supporting the progressive position a plus (+) vote, receives full credit, a vote against receives zero points for that vote, and an abstaining voter receives half. Excused absences and recused votes do not factor into the voting score. The leadership score accounts for 20 points of the lawmaker's final score, and the votes account for 80%" - Direct from Progressive Maryland Website on scoring.

Presumably all pluses are bad for Republican Office holders and the more pluses one has the higher/better the score you receive (Democrats receive higher scores) in the eyes of Progressive Md. Of course because of this rating, it is stated/inferred that Andy is automatically not a true conservative, gave an unwarranted attacked EJ Pipkin for not being Conservative enough, and has been lying to voters. This is simply not true and it is a straw man attack on Andy.

Andy in 2007 received three (+)'s and 4 (-)'s, one no vote taken (N/A), and a 9/20 leadership score. Here is the SCORE CARD! Please note that the Senators and Delegates voting are different because some are a House or a Senate vote only, not that they both had a chance to vote on the same bill because of the bill failing in one of the branches.

2 of the three (+)'s were on School Construction and Paper Trail for Cast Ballots. Both bills were unanimously passed by both Houses and by both Parties with one exempted vote. The complete list can be found HERE! No doubt here that those votes were in the best interest of Maryland and both Parties agreed! How could a plus possibly be bad in this instance?

The other plus came from Public Funding of Elections, which again is rated highest by the scoring system as being one of the top issues of the score card, 2nd position in this case. This was a Senate only vote. Now this is where it gets interesting.

The numbers are 19 Democrats received (+)'s and 14 received (-)'s. Including in those minuses included Senators Mike Miller, Nathaniel McFadden, and Edward Kassemeyer. The President of the Senate, The President Pro Tem, and the Majority Leader respectively. Shouldn't these be the individuals getting the pluses from this group, to be more progressive? Complete List!

On the Republican side three received (+)'s and 11 received (-)'s. Besides Andy the other two (+)'s were the Minority Leader David Brinkley and Minority Whip Allen Kittleman.

The total 22 (+)'s and 25 (-)'s. That bill was a close vote, especially on the Democratic side, nearly a split vote. Clearly there are splits in both Parties, especially in the central leadership. This Senate only vote does not provide any conclusive firm evidence because there is no clear line between whether a plus means you are Liberal or not or whether a negative means you are Republican or not. It is not a clear cut Republican or Democrat issue.

From two unanimous votes from BOTH PARTIES and one vote where either side does not know where it stands (granted on a rocky political slope and remember that the Democratic Leaders in the Senate (3 of 4) got negative marks) cannot constitute whether or not Andy Harris is too Liberal or not a Conservative. It is not possible with these premises; it's too far fetched. Again the issues that are used are not clear cut Republican or Democratic stances such as taxes or labor which can easily distinguish party lines.

Of course you can post the results from without any research or links to show the whole story and not give a proper narrative. I wonder why? Andy Harris has a solid record since 1998 in the Maryland Senate as an outstanding Conservative and leader for Maryland. The only way to discredit that record is try to paint a false picture. Data does not lie.

A single vote on a single bill should not alienate any voter to sway completely away from their representative unless that official creates a pattern of voting that is not consistent with how they want to be represented. Andy has not done this unlike what is inferred in that other post and again clearly this rating from Progressive Maryland does not constitute such a pattern. It is an imperfect system which does not work every time in every instance to clearly make a distinction; non partisan issues and ambiguous issues cloud such conclusions.

By the way, here is Senator Andy Harris's 2008 Scorecard! Your not going to be able to say much about this one or make the same false claim.

I Bet You Could Walk On That!

Taken from the spillway at Tony Tank Lake facing towards Rt. 13 of both forks of the pond. Kinda overgrown don't ya think?

Your Tax Dollars Hard At Work!

While I respect the employees of the City of Salisbury, sometimes I have to question the wisdom of their superiors?

OK, they're spraying for weeds on the curbs and sidewalks. Two people in a vehicle at one time and let's not forget the gas bill for the truck they're driving. Oh, I should add. Remember that lamp at the end of the Plaza I posted the other day? FIXED!

Some of you are in the landscaping business. Would YOU be doing it this way, or is there a more efficient way to do it?

City Off The Hook, No Fines (This Time)

No Fines for WWTP Spills, WBOC Reports

By Terry E. Cohen, Council Member

Tonight, WBOC reported that the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) will not fine the City of Salisbury for the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) spills of June 17 and 19. According to the WBOC report, a fine is not being incurred because the MDE concluded the problem was due to "contractor error."

Click here to see the full WBOC report.

Also aired today by WMDT was a follow up on the fine that was imposed on the city for its higher-than-allowed contaminant levels in "normal discharge" (not spills), as posted on this site on Wednesday (see below). The WMDT story indicated that the MDE just completed an annual inspection of the plant, and a review of that the inspection is just starting.

Click here to see the full WMDT report.

Based on these reports, I am making additional requests to the administration for documents and a more in-depth understanding of such issues as the new valve referenced in the WBOC report.

I am pleased to hear that the city was not deemed at fault for the spills and will not incur a fine for them. I commend both TV stations for their follow up on the WWTP issues.

Both Councilwoman Campbell and I have been asking questions about accountability, costs, and preventive steps. While there is still much yet to know and understand, it is gratifying that constituents are getting some questions answered about an issue of great importance to them.

Having read both WBOC and WMDT reports I have one thing to say about this mess. John Pick is getting so much like Barrie it's hard to believe anything he says anymore. In his report to WBOC he cries the blues making excuses for why it took a month to notify council about the older discharge fines. Nice try Johnny boy but, no banana for you. We saw the documents. Funny thing, they're dated. The city got the MDE bills June 4, BEFORE the first spill in June. Hey Johnny boy, isn't that why you have an overpaid ASSISTANT, Lore Chambers, to ASSIST you? Is it to hard for her to type a memo or send an email with those acrylic nails?

Say what you want but its a good thing for all of Salisbury and Wicomico County that Debbie Campbell and Terry Cohen are asking questions and demanding answers. At least until Monday night, when Louise Smith and the other two bobbleheads Shanie Shields and Bubba Comegys will take action to shut them up. I swear those 3 sit on their brains.
