"Do you have a metal detector? If not I would suggest you invest in one."

This was a comment that just came in on the 300 W. Main Street Post I put up earlier.

Nope, my door is wide open. Just remember, you are walking into MY home. You know what they say about that when it comes to defense, right? I wonder if this persons name rhymes with Lordy?

An E-Mail That Just Came In

"Joe,

A coworker and I were just talking… and we came up with the idea that you should buy property in Salisbury and run for mayor in the next election J Give Barrie a run for her money… it would be nice to see someone who actually cares about the city in office."

First of all, thank you. However, I do own property, including two residences in Downtown Salisbury. Considering we own too many animals to live in the City of Salisbury, we choose not to reside here.

More importantly, Mayor Barrie Tilghman is not going to run for re-election. Gary Comegys will attempt to take her place instead. So I wouldn't have to worry about running up against Barrie Tilghman.

The way I personally feel about it is, I believe I can do far greater work for the City of Salisbury by sitting on the outside looking in. This Blog has done more for the City than anything else I can think of.

I spent more than 20 years working my tail off to be in the position to retire and not deal with all those pressures any more. I'm not saying one day down the road I wouldn't be interested but right now is not the time.

I'm personally hoping the Citizens will see a Candidate this go around that has the same integrity as let's say Sheriff Mike Lewis. An individual that could get into Office, know there's no hidden agenda and will dedicate their life to giving back to this community. I believe we're going to see some people like that in this upcoming election and Gary Comegys isn't one of them.

I certainly thank you for that kind gesture but I think I'll just sit in the background for a while and watch how the City heals and pulls itself out of the hole Barrie Tilghman has dug them into. It's going to be a long road to any real recovery and everyone is going to have to understand that whomever gets elected is going to take more than 4 years to get things straight.

Remember, the people who will be running who really care have been to most Council Meetings and have been involved in the community for many years. The Barrie Wanna Be's are the slick ones that will start coming out of the woodwork in the very near future.

More Tagging/Graffiti In Salisbury

While the positive identification jury is still out on the woman murdered last week in Salisbury, across the street possible Gangs are still tagging the area to let others know this is their territory. Tagging is kind of like a dog peeing on a fire hydrant. Obviously the SPD isn't covering this area all that well if the tagging continues to happen on a daily basis. This is yet another trailer in the back of Lowe's parking lot.

Exxon At Rt. 13 & College Ave Ran Pumps Dry Yesterday

While Salisbury News continues to expose the lowest gas prices in Town, the Exxon on Rt 13 & College Ave has been overflowing with new Customers to a point they had to place plastic bags on their pumps last night because they flat out ran the tanks dry!

In speaking to one of the employees there we were told that they get a gas delivery every day and this has never happened. They'll be ordering/stocking more gas now because their prices are that much lower and the lines to get gas there are steady now all day long.

I'm pleased Salisbury News could have such a huge impact on letting people know where the best price in Town is and see this business grow like it should. I'll bet they never off FREE gas and a subscription to the Daily Times there!

Sending a Kid Back to School? Here's What the County Wants You to Supply

The school supply lists are out on the Worcester County BOE website. http://www.worcester.k12.md.us/

After looking at these lists a couple of things are obvious to me. First is that budget cuts have definitely come to the BOE. Second is that some of these grades/teachers are INSANE.

At Buckingham Elementary the list specifies what brand of scissors the children are "requested" to bring in and asks for (I kid you not) 24 glue sticks for all Kindergarden and First Grade students. I'm kind of hoping that's a typo and should be 2-4 glue sticks because if each class has 20 kids that's 480 glue sticks per CLASSROOM!!! At Ocean City Elementary the Third Grade children are asked to bring in paper towels (Bounty) as well as their own band aids. At Pocomoke Elementary the Second Graders are asked to bring in 40 pencils each. That's 800 pencils. And 10 glue sticks each. Which is a bit more reasonable than Buckingham but still. Showell Elementary requests that each Third Grade student bring in 15 wooden pencils. Snow Hill Elementary requests that their Third Grade pulls in 3 purple ball point pens and 20 pencils each. (Purple?)

On to the middle schools we go. Fourth Graders at Berlin Intermediate are requested to bring in 24 sharpened #2 pencils. Seventh Graders at Pocomoke Middle need a 3"-4" binder with inside front and back pockets. Like those will last beyond the first week of school. At Snow Hill Middle the Eighth Graders are NOT allowed to have gel pens, fluorescent pens, pencil boxes, scissors, or white out. So clearly no running with scissors for the preteens. Stephen Decatur Middle did not have a list out.

There are some schools that are requesting no rolling back packs. Almost all of the schools are requesting no Trapper Keepers or mechanical pencils. You’d think someone lost money on Mead® or maybe had a bad experience where a mechanical pencil attacked them. Personally I prefer mechanical pencils (no sharpening) and Trappers are better capable of dealing with the messes that having boys create.

Yes, I understand that some of this is to cover children who don’t have enough for the school year. Truly I don’t have a problem helping kids learn. But 6 pencils per kid is more than capable of covering that. As is 2 glue sticks. It’s not like the kids even get the chance to cut and paste anymore with all the focus on testing. But that’s a rant for another day.

Please remember that the ONE thing that guarantees greater success in school is greater parental involvement with children. Ask questions, read homework, go to school events and read to your kids. That’s more important than any amount of pencils or glue sticks.

Thanks for the tip Mom!

Embezzlement At County Council Meeting?

080805WCCMeetingDid the corrupt dinosaur we all know as the Wicomico County Liquor Control Board embezzle from the taxpayers at yesterday's council meeting? If they were paying those dispensary employees in the audience they were!

Since the council postponed its vote on a referendum until August 19th, I've offered a few suggestions as to what I think should be done.

Salisbury News 300 W. Main Street

While I have been in this building on the Downtown Plaza for a few weeks now, people are coming by each and every day. One visitor that came by yesterday didn't know the exact location so I thought I'd share that it is at the very end of the Downtown Plaza at the West end.

My doors are always open when I'm here and there's a parking lot just behind Parker Place and or in front of Feldman's. So if you have news, information and or you'd just like to see what we've done here, stop by and say hello.

A Johnson Lake Community Resident Attacked This Morning

"Hi Joe.

I am a huge fan of salisbury news and was hoping that you would post my concern. I live in the Johnson Lake Community off of North Division street. I have a great set of neighbors and I like to describe my community as a small town where your children can play outside and ride their bikes.

This morning, my neighbor was attacked in her home. Unfortunately, I am not sure how she is doing at this time, however, I am sure that she is truly tramatized from the incident. While I am not trying to make speculations, however, our street has a home that I typically refer to as the "crackhouse".

The police have been to the home on numerous occasions and have arrested many of the tenants. The home is a rental and is situated across the street from the neighborhood playground, which as a community, we helped to create. On numerous occasions I have picked up used condoms from the playground so that my young child will not see these. The community has asked the mayor and police for much assistance with this home. However, the owner, continues to not care as to how this is affecting our community.

I guess my point is, I was hoping by posting this, that maybe something can be done for our neighborhood. I am scared at this point, being a single mother, as to what could have happened to me this morning should I not have locked my doors. The mayor says she cares so much, why does she continue to let this occur?"

Are you listening Chief & Mayor?

Andy Harris Has An Energy Plan ...

... so does the House conservative leadership.

What's Frank Kratovil's plan? More regulation? Obama's profit expropriation? Wind-powered cars? How about perpetual motion machines?

or ...

Kratovil could just flip and tell First District residents that he's now going to support drilling. We all know that he'll say anything for a vote. Hell, a few voters might actually believe him.

Frank's going to cut our taxes too. Right?

Shore Bank Calls 911

Yesterday morning the Shore Bank called 911 for an alleged gas leak. The Fire Department was quick to respond to check out the apartments upstairs to see if there was in fact a gas leak there. The fumes were horrible downstairs in the Bank where they had to open doors and clear the air inside. Perhaps someone from the Fire Department can update us on the outcome?

Salisbury's National Night Out

While Salisbury certainly had a different National Night out, many attended and enjoyed the festivities. However, it was all about the photo ops as the City went into this Park two weeks before the event and added a brand new set of Basketball Courts and brand new fencing around the entire Park. Can you tell it's an election year and they're doing everything they can, (finally) for the black communities? I guess it takes every 4 years to get something done for them!

The Salisbury Police Department and Sheriff's Department arrived in full uniform but the Mayor was absent from the event. I said this last year and I'll repeat it this year, the Police Officers need to dress down for these events and be one of the "guys." That's just my opinion but as you can tell from my posts on other events, they were very personable and down to earth. I hope you get my drift here?

Fruitland's National Night Out

Much like Princess Anne, the people are real, loving and caring in this community. There was no last minute dressing the Town up to impress those taking photographs, it was simple, down to earth community fellowship and business as usual in Fruitland. The newly elected Chief Phillips also joined in the celebration and openly shook hands with everyone attending. They served UNBELIEVABLE Baked Chicken, Hot Dogs & Hamburgers, always a treat! There were Fire Truck Rides, a water slide and all sorts of activities for the kids.

Harris Launches First General Election Ad

Annapolis - Today, the Andy Harris for Congress campaign launched the first television advertisement of the general election. The ad outlines Andy Harris' plan to solve the energy crisis.

"Andy's energy plan is exactly what the doctor ordered." said Chris Meekins, Campaign Manager for the Andy Harris for Congress campaign. "Andy's energy plan offers a comprehensive approach that balances the need for more oil through domestic exploration with the need to move towards alternative fuels like wind solar and biofuels."

The ad is available for viewing at www.andyharris.com or by clicking here.

Below is the script of the television ad:

"Gas prices are skyrocketing and Congress just points fingers. We can do better. My solution, an energy plan that includes greater production of domestic fuel alternative energy like wind, solar and biofuel and more conservation.

As a doctor, I have seen what miracles modern medicine has accomplished. We can do the same with energy. It takes leadership and vision. That's why I'm running for Congress.

I'm Andy Harris and I approved this message"

It's 9:00 AM In Salisbury

So if ANYONE is late for work, this is why! That's right, during Rush Hour they chose to lift the Bridges. Idiots!

Princess Anne National Night Out

Now this was far different than any of the events I went to for one reason. FELLOWSHIP! The people in Princess Anne are all about their community where everyone smiles and says hello, no matter who you are. Just look at the very first picture and you'll recognize the Chief of Police preparing food for everyone who attended. They bought 300 hamburgers and 300 hot dogs and guess what, they were gone in no time! The kids had a blast and quite frankly I enjoyed being there as well. Great People, Princess Anne!

Pocomoke's National Night Out

The singer above was "Jus K"
Pocomoke City had by fat the greatest turn out of adults and children by the thousands. Celebrities were everywhere and I have to be honest with you, that City takes this event seriously and GIVES BACK to their community.

They're in P-City Too.....

While coming home from the beach this weekend and passing the old Pocomoke Truck we couldn't help but see this.stuff-052.jpg

Mayor McDermott had posted on his blog a few months ago that some graffiti had been found in a couple of different locations in town. I posted a comment to his blog asking if this was 'gang' related graffiti or just kids spray painting a building. He responded that officers investigated it and had reported it was just juvenile related. I hadn't seen the graffiti that he reported on and didn't make any further comments.

Recently there was a symposium held in Ocean City to educate local law enforcement agencies on how recognize gang activity in their communities and how to handle it. This was reportedly attended by all agencies within the realm. And just this week Joe just did a couple of stories about gang crime in Salisbury and Delmar two of which resulted serious injuries due the violence involved.

Unfortunately, the City of Salisbury's Mayor had made in a public statement recently that there were no gangs or prostitution in Salisbury. Since that time Mr. Albero has found quite a few a exceptions to this proclamation. Including the body of a known prostitute found in a dumpster.

While many folks would be shocked to think that gangs are here in our small town they are in fact here... and have been here for quite sometime. Gang culture relies on the rest of society ignorance of them and their ways of communicating.

Having grown up in Los Angeles, where the nations largest gangs originated my husband was familiar with the Crips and the Bloods. He warned me 20 years ago that he had seen Crips here, as he had recognized their clothing. I really didn't pay much attention to it, but the more I have read about the subject the more I am convinced he was probably right.

After last weeks violence in Salisbury and taking these pictures at the truck stop, I began researching to see what I could find. In today's instant information age I can tell you there is tons of information available online. A Google search brings you a plethora of information that is very informing and educational. You can even go to YouTube and type in a particular gangs names and see the tutorials on how to read the graffiti.

The graffiti at the Truck Stop says the word MAD with $$'s surrounding it and the letters ESC with arrows pointing south. In all of the information that I read it said that communities must be proactive in their fight against graffiti, as if left un re mediated more will pop up.stuff-059.jpg

A community in Portland Oregon has a step by step way to handle the problem in their town.

1 . They document it

2. They match it to others that they have found

3. The repaint the entire side of the building in which it was found. They said that merely just blocking over it never worked.

They also stated that you may end up painting a building a couple of times but eventually they give up as they realize that their work will not be tolerated. It is the communites that take action that are the communities that get rid of it and keep it gone.

Another thing that I read is that every single letter and the way it is written is very important to the meaning of a piece of graffiti. Sometimes they are used as maps, and invitations, others to stake off territory, others to warn rival gangs and the use of $$$'s were always of sign for drug dealing as their means to make money.

So if you know the owners of the Truck Stop inform them of the information that you find on gangs and gang graffitti and ask them to paint the graffittii off of the building. As a community we must be proactive against yet another element to deal with.

Where Would YOU Prefer To Shop?

I'm told yesterday that the Exxon at College Ave and Rt. 13, (not a Gordy Mart) is $3.67 a gallon! Are we keeping them honest, OR WHAT?
