No Need To Wait Till Morning

Salisbury News has already broken the record for our best day ever! There couldn't have been a better day for that to happen either. The day before an election when most people are looking to find out anything and everything the possibly can before the go to the Polls in the morning. How cool is that! Thanks for visiting Folks. Lots more to come tomorrow morning. By the way, school is out tomorrow and I have a little one home sick anyway, so I can't get out of the house. If anyone can take some pictures of the Polls and traffic and send them our way I'd be grateful.

A Letter To The Editor About Mayoral Candidate Jim Ireton

"I think something needs to be said about Jim ireton's character. He had a back surgery in the 90's and he was still out in the snow today shoveling and salting his neighbors sidewalks. He may be hurting tonight but he was still willing to help anybody as much as he could. That really says something about how much he cares about the community, and what a great guy he is."

The Harlem Globetrotters Come To Salisbury

They can't pack them in like a Fernando Guerrero Fight but it looks like there's plenty of people enjoying the show.

Special Thank you to the Elks

Everyone had a great time on the only good "hill" in Salisbury. It is truly a Salisbury tradition. The Elks are always willing to share their wonderful property and facility with the community. Thank you!

So they can continue the tradition, please clean up when you all are done having fun.

Legal disclaimer for the Elks. They are not encouraging anyone to trespass or held liable for anyone getting hurt. Note the signs posted. They are just a wonderful organization that supports the community!

BREAKING NEWS! HOLY COW, GET A LOAD OF THIS!

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Media:

I sent this correspondence late this afternoon to Salisbury City Clerk Brenda Colegrove.

Tim Chaney

March 2, 2009

Dear Members of the City Ethics Commission and

of the City and County Boards of Elections:

I am writing to request an investigation by you into potentially unfair election practices involving the development/management company of the Cottages at River House in the municipal District 1 of the city of Salisbury. I am concerned that the vulnerable population of residents in this affordable housing development, who are primarily senior citizens in a minority district, may have had unequal access to all candidates in tomorrow’s primary municipal election.

Attached is the letter sent to residents by the owner of the management company, Schuster Management. In the letter, he endorses two candidates, a councilman running for mayor who has three opponents and the incumbent for the District 1 seat for which two others and I are also candidates.

This facility receives public funding, federal funding, I believe. It is my understanding that institutions funded in this way must not be partisan or give support to just one candidate in a race. My understanding is that candidate forums or “meet and greets” may be held if all candidates are invited, which does not appear to be the case here.

Based on this letter, it appears use of the facilities and resources of this development appear were offered solely to these two candidates, who are believed to have accepted the offer and may have attended, although I cannot confirm this at this time. I did not receive any invitation to be part of an event at this development. I have heard that other mayoral candidates requested to have access to the facility or the meeting, but were denied.

Mr. Schuster’s letter seems to imply that support for these candidates may be in return for favored votes for the facility or in hope for favored votes in the future. In the letter, he says, “I am supporting Mr. Comegys for his bid for Mayor. Mr. Comegys has been a supporter of affordable housing in Salisbury and for the construction of The Cottages.”

Residents receiving this letter may feel an implied pressure to vote for a particular candidate to protect their homes. They may not complain about the letter for fear it would lead to the loss of their residency. The facility’s shuttle may be used to transport residents who received this letter.

I cannot say for sure whether Mr. Schuster’s letter and luncheon event and the actions by the candidates constitute some form of wrongdoing or conflict of interest, but I am asking that you investigate what the case is. Taxpayer money is involved, decisions by council members are involved, and the integrity of our election process in Salisbury is at stake. Elected officials should always act to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest or taking unfair advantage and to act with full disclosure.

Given that District 1 had only 49 people turn out to vote in the last primary election in 2005 and this development has about 60 registered voters, these circumstances could play a decisive role in this election.

Most important, I want to know that the constituents I hope to serve are being treated fairly, with full access to all candidates and election information as required by law, without any sense of coercion – overt or covert. With the poverty and crime that already plague the people of my district, it is especially important that they be treated with openness and fairness.

Please advise me of what actions and findings your board will engage in concerning this matter. Thank you in advance for addressing my concern. My personal address, telephone and email information are under my electronic signature below.

Sincerely,

John Timothy “Tim” Chaney

Candidate, Salisbury City Council, District 1

Authority: Tim Chaney for District One – Shirley M. Dashiell, Treasurer

Wicomico County Schools Closed Tomorrow

Due to the weather, all Wicomico County Public Schools are closed tomorrow. School offices and the Central Office will open one hour late.

Business Closings Tomorrow

WBOC just announced they will no longer air any more business closings due to the weather conditions. That being said, let the real Delmarva's News Leader take it over and allow each one of those businesses to simply put their closings under comments here.

Road Conditions Are Treacherous

If you do not have to be out and about tonight, DON'T! Right now with the wind chill it's a mere 9 degrees outside. Our road has had plows down it all day and this is what's left. It will be in the single digits all night and at 5:00 AM tomorrow it will feel like 4 degrees out. My prediction is, no school tomorrow.

Truck 16 Questions, Answers & More Questions

The following is an email sent to the Mayor, Council Members and John Pick. The questions are in bold, answers are italicized and below the italics are additional questions asked of the city. More waste of taxpayer dollars. Remember Gary Comegys voted for every single new toy the fire department wanted. Including an increase to his own retirement fund.

John Pick wrote:

The following provides answers to your questions on the pending
sale of Truck 16.

1. Why was this truck not sold on Ebay or through other fire truck or truck sales brokers?

This vehicle was advertised with a nationally recognized used fire
apparatus broker, Firetec, both online and in their January 2009
catalog. (No inquiries were received as a result of this advertisement.)
The Procurement Division currently does not use Ebay to dispose of
surplus equipment.

Well maybe you should be using Ebay, it's not hard to post an auction, anyone with a computer can do it. Here is a link to a 1975 Mack ladder truck that is currently bid at $3300. Ebay Fire Truck This truck is 34 years old and bringing more than you are saying Pierce offered as a trade. I'm sure a 1997 would have brought more than we're getting for it from Pittsville.

UPDATE: Truck 16 is a 1980 Mack. It should still bring more than $3200. No more use than that truck got the only thing old on it is the paint. You can't kill a Mack truck.

2. Was the truck appraised before being sold? If so, what was the
appraised value?

The vehicle (with equipment) was appraised for trade-in by Singer
Associates and Pierce Manufacturing ($3,200.00).

This is not an appraisal, it is what they are offering as a trade. No different than any shiester car dealer. The city should have been insulted by such an offer and considered taking their business elsewhere.

3. Were the tools and additional equipment sold with the truck? If so, were these items appraised separate from the truck?

The tools that exceeded their useful life with our department were
advertised in the RFQ and are intended to be sold with the vehicle. These items were not appraised separate from the vehicle.

Rather than replace only those that were no longer useful, the city is replacing all tools required for the new ladder truck? The city ordered and paid for them separate from the truck, so why were the tools and additional equipment not appraised separately.

4. Providing the tools were appraised, what was the appraised
value?

See question #3.

5. Was the request for sealed bids advertised?

The RFQ (#8-09) for Truck 16, including equipment, was posted on the
City of Salisbury's web page on November 21, 2008 through the close of
the bid January 21, 2009, and was advertised in the Daily Times on
November 23, 2008.

6. Who was to receive and be responsible for the sealed bids received?

The Internal Services Department (Procurement Division) received all
responses to the RFQ. Quotes received were opened on January 21, 2009 at 3:30 P.M.

7. How many sealed bids were received?

Two responses to the RFQ were received:
Northstar Fire $2,000.00
Pittsville Volunteer Fire Department $5,500.00

8. How much of a financial loss was realized by the city in the
sale of this truck?

Since the vehicle and equipment exceeded their useful life for the Fire
Department ,and will be fully depreciated by time of sale, the City will
actually net a gain in unbudgeted revenue in the amount of $5,500.00.

I fail to see how a vehicle of this size, barely used has exceeded its useful life. The only thing lost would be the depreciation for tax purposes not the usefulness of this piece of equipment. The city is not realizing a gain when there are large payments being made in the form of lease payments for the unnecessary replacement of this vehicle. Wouldn't it have been far less costly to the taxpayers to maintain Truck 16?

9. Why is the city dispatching trucks to Appleton, Wisconsin for painting, retrofitting and warranty work? What is the cost of this trip to the city? Please include all expenses paid by the city, e.g. man hours, per diem, fuel, tolls, wear and tear etc.

The volunteer fire line officers have a desire to implement several
upgrades to the 2005 apparatus that will enhance firefighter safety,
operational efficiency and promote the service life of these vehicles.
The upgrades include larger electronic mirrors that were excluded from
the original specs due to space constraints at the old fire station;

Larger electronic mirrors? Do you mean electric mirrors, that are heated for defrosting and adjustable via electric motor, switch operated in the cab? If so, these mirrors and brackets can be purchased and mounted at Barr Freightliner, Barr International, Harvey Mack, Truck Parts or even NAPA, all right here in Salisbury and Delmar. Total cost of mirrors, brackets and mounting would not exceed $500.00

installation of new SCBA crew cab seats that are safer and operationally
more efficient for occupant use. There are several additional NFPA
upgrades that have been identified for inclusion in this project
(securing hose lines, enhanced LED lighting).

All of the above could be done here locally. This does not require a manufacturer facility to perform the work.

Additionally, there is a desire to repaint the cabs of these apparatus to meet the new paint scheme for Department (black over red). After discussing the scope of
this project with the manufacturer, Pierce recommends that the units are
returned to the Wisconsin location where they will be entered into their
refurbishing plant and these changes can be made quicker and at a cheaper cost than at a local Pierce dealership.

Please explain how it is less expensive to run heavy vehicles 2,000 + miles, round trip, with tolls, wear and tear and fuel at over $3.00 per gallon. These vehicles more than likely average 6 to 7 miles per gallon, if that much. Barr International has a paint shop that can accomodate equipment of this size. The money spent locally would more than make up for what it would cost to take the equipment 2,000 miles, round trip, across the country. This paint scheme was not decided on by the volunteers, it was decided on by Chiefs See and Gordy. Lets be honest for a change, the firefighters, career and paid had no say in this matter. It's just another "want" to quote Deputy Chief Bill Gordy, of the "big boys and their toys".

The Department workgroup has developed the scope of this project with Pierce but has
not yet received cost estimates. Once these figures are received the workgroup will make a presentation to the Fire Chief for final consideration and approval. If approved, the vehicles will be driven to the Wisconsin Pierce plant by professional drivers employed by Pierce. The volunteer corporation will fund this entire project. Subsequently, there will be no cost to the City.

The volunteers are funded by county taxpayers. I for one do not appreciate my tax dollars being wasted on trips for paint and lights that could be performed by local businesses. To say there is no cost to the city is false. The cost of wear and tear is a cost to the city.

10. Why were these trucks dispatched to Wisconsin not sent to Pierce's regional service centers in either Baltimore or Middletown, DE?

No vehicles have been sent anywhere at this time. See question #9.

11. What is the depreciation schedule for the truck, tools and other depreciable equipment sold with this piece of equipment?

This vehicle was purchased 4/15/1997 at a cost of $130,000. The
depreciation schedule for this equipment was 12 years; therefore it will
be fully depreciated as of March 2009. The unit is not anticipated for
release until mid-March 2009.

What this all boils down to is the SFD Chiefs want new trucks, new fire palace, new paint and the city is going to roll over and give it to them because they want it? We county taxpayers don't take kindly to our tax dollars being spent frivolously. It won't be the paint job that comes to our aid when we need emergency assistance.
Thank you, for your time, although I found these answers to be non answers.

Note to Shanie: The next time you are crying about the calls SFD runs to the county, it would be wise of you to remember, the county taxes are paid to SFD Volunteer, Inc., without them, you would not have any new, shiny, red and black fire toys.

HOLY COW!

If these numbers keep up throughout the day/evening, Salisbury News will in fact have yet another record day!

I'm doing my very best to keep the news and information coming Folks. There are still plenty of interesting Posts to come. Thanks for visiting.

BOB CALDWELL WINS THE SALISBURY STANDPIPE STANDOFF!

At last week’s candidate forum sponsored by the Camden Association, the only candidate who was opposed to refurbishing the non-functional "standpipe" was Bob Caldwell. The other candidates for mayor did not object to spending City funds – estimated at $135,000 – to refurbish it. Since then, the City has posted on its website the actual cost estimate to demolish the obsolete standpipe – $47,150.00 although it has had that information for several months now.

If refurbished, the standpipe will need further maintenance and repainting in the future – i.e., it will continue to be a sinkhole for public money. Why the City didn’t have it demolished a couple years ago, when scrap metal was much more valuable, is astounding. Now, it has contacted a firm in Kentucky for an estimate.

Do you think that a local Delmarva business might have a better price to tear it down and haul the pieces away?

Once again, voters can see that electing Bob Caldwell as the next mayor is the best way to restore fiscal and budgetary discipline in Salisbury.

We weren't kidding when we said we'd be keeping an eye on what was going on at The Cottages at River House. Our people started following this location starting around 11:30 AM today and so far there's been no sign of Gary Comegys. We should have a report in later from Mike Della Penna III as he stated he has a contact from the inside and should know what was said at this Luncheon. More to come........

WOULD THERE BE A SALISBURY FOOD TAX, TOO, IF COMEGYS WINS?

A few years ago, when the City Council was controlled by Barrie and her "Dream Team" puppets – Comegys, Cathcart & Dunn – she asked them to support getting state legislation to allow the City to put a tax on food sales. They danced to her tune, until the local restaurant operators presented a petition with a couple thousand signatures by persons who objected. Then Bubba and his buddies abandoned ship.

Clearly Comegys is a tax and spend career bureaucrat at the State Highway Administration (probably Maryland’s most overfed agency). He has voted twice to raise the City’s property tax rate, which has increased by more than 25% since 2003. He was first elected in 2004.

And look at how he has approved spending our tax dollars: that "TIF" subsidy for the old mall, funding a marina that burns money, refurbishing the obsolete and unused "standpipe" and the nonsense proposed for the "North Prong", not to mention the pork for the fire department. We can expect much higher taxes if Bubba wins.

Here’s the best way to restore fiscal discipline in Salisbury – ELECT BOB CALDWELL. And cast your other vote for Jim Ireton to eliminate Bubba from being in the general election.

A Letter To The Editor On The Salisbury Elections

"Joe,
Love your blog. I lived in Salisbury from 1959 until we retired and moved South in 1996. I am not familiar with any of candidates, except Bob Caldwell, so other than reading your impressions I am at a loss as to each of their attributes.

I do know that all the bickering, childish behavior that has been exhibited over the last many years makes Salisbury seem like a circus. Past Mayors such as Paul Martin, Frank Morris and leaders such as Dave Rodgers would be so ashamed of these actions. It is time to discontinue all the discourse and start looking out for the citizens of Salisbury. The town is on such a downward spiral that I really have no interest in coming back.

During my residence in Salisbury, I was pretty involved in civic matters, serving on the Board of the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce, as Vice President of the Jaycees, instrumental in the Salisbury Festival, chairing the project for three years, being involved with the bringing of the YMCA to Salisbury, as well as it's Executive Director for 3 years so I will always have fond memories of the old Salisbury. Now it is time to reestablish those old and better days by making sure that there is a group of people running the town that are mature and have the best interest of Salisbury and its citizens in mind."

THE SALISBURY PRIMARY: USE ALL YOU’VE GOT – DO A DOUBLE SHOT

Tomorrow will be a real opportunity for City voters to “throw the bums out” in order to restore Salisbury after 10 plus years of the turmoil and travesty fomented by Barrie Tilghman and her puppets on the City Council that include the Dream Team (Comegys, Cathcart & Dunn) and now the Comegys-Smith-Shields consortium. There are two positions on the ballot: mayor and the District 1 seat on the Council now held by Shanie Shields, who is seeking reelection. In each contest, a voter may cast his or her ballot for two different candidates. The two winners in each will run in the general election on April 7.

Ms. Shields is the lesser evil, so let’s discuss the contest for her seat first. Fortunately, there are two viable candidates to replace her – Tim Chaney and Cynthia Polk. Probably 60-70% of the District 1 voters favor one of that pair, and the other 30% or so prefer Shields. If those who prefer Chaney or Polk cast a vote for both, Shanie is history.

And now the main event – to decide the candidate to succeed Salisbury’s worst mayor in recent history, possibly all-time, who has presided over the rape of the City by slumlords and developers. Many prayed yesterday that it won’t be Comegys, who is probably the worst member of the City Council in recent memory, and the only one to be hauled into Circuit Court for non-payment of child support while serving as a member.

Voters who prefer one of the other mayoral candidates – especially those who support Jim Ireton – may cast their “2nd” vote for Bob Caldwell. If enough do that, tomorrow will be the beginning of the end of an era in which commercial interests have controlled City government and used it as their personal cash cow.

Don’t squander this opportunity by wasting your “2nd vote” in the primary election tomorrow. BANG . . . BANG!

Another Armored Car Flips On Route 1

Troopers are currently on the scene of a single vehicle crash on Route 1 southbound, south of Bayview Road.

This crash involved a Brinks Armored Car which was operated by James McNally, 52, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The truck was traveling southbound in the right lane of Route 1 when the operator lost control due to the poor road conditions.

The truck went off of the east edge of the roadway and overturned.

The operator was not injured. A passenger, Brian Weaver, unknown age, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sustained a non-life threatening injury and was transported to Christiana Hospital.

Mr. McNally was cited for Careless Driving.

Election day and snow...

We are already expecting typically low turnout in SBY's primary tomorrow but with several inches of snow today and temps in the single digits tonight, I have a feeling we might see some of the lowest numbers in years! Any thoughts on ways to get out the vote tomorrow and how badly will the results be skewed by the weather? Who's supporters are the heartiest and loyal enough to make it to the polls come hell or high water, or snow and ice as the case may be?

This just in:

The MD State Highway Administration has informed me that they will be out early to plow all the streets in front of Gary Comegys supporters' homes. The bad news is that they will be taking that snow and dumping it in the driveways of Jim Ireton and Bob Caldwell supporters' homes.

:(

The Citizens Of Salisbury Can Now Do A Victory Dance

I just called Cottages at Riverhouse to ask if Gary would still be coming today. The answer was "no, he will not be there."

Salisbury University Officially Closed Today

Joe, Just letting your readers know all classes are cancelled and the campus is officially closed on Monday March 2nd.

The ‘Stating the Obvious Traffic Report’

The predictions were right and the State of Delaware received some substantially heavy snow fall.

With this snow event also came some challenging road conditions. Reports had come in throughout the night and into today that described the roads as snow covered, slushy, but passable. Many motorists have taken this to heart and went about their morning commute as if the weather was sunny and 85 degrees.

As of the time of this release, many Troopers throughout the state are busy handling traffic crash. And when they finish with their current complaint, they will be immediately dispatched to the next accident waiting to be investigated.

As the title of this release speaks to, and to ‘State the Obvious,’ motorists need to exercise extreme caution with the current conditions as they are. It will greatly aid emergency workers and road crews if those heading out, even at this hour, will stagger their commutes so that less motorists are on the roads at any given time.

Many media representatives have requested crash totals and those numbers will bee forthcoming later today after this snow event has passed.

BARRIE SPOONFEEDS BUBBA COMEGYS ON WICO-1320AM RADIO

In case you missed it, the current edition of Barrie Tilghman’s (public service-?) show “Monday Morning With The Mayor,” is a mayoral campaign ad for her dedicated puppet, Bubba Comegys. Not only does she throw him multiple softball leading questions, mostly trying to portray favorably the Barrie-Bubba control of the City for the landlords and developers, but she invites him to TRY (he falls flat, of course) to explain why he is “the best choice” for mayor. This scam, together with the shut-out of the other candidates at The Cottages at River House, shows that Bubba and the Queen will stoop to any level to win the upcoming election. It is obvious that if Comegys replaces Barrie as mayor, we will see 4 more years of the same shenanigans and schemes to boost the fortunes of their backers at the expense of City residents.

There’s an opportunity to put this pair where they belong (it ain’t pretty there) -- in tomorrow’s primary election each voter can and should cast two votes: for Bob Caldwell and Jim Ireton.

YES YOU CAN!

GARY COMEGYS, AN ENGINEER – NOT

The voters guide published by The Daily Times yesterday describes Mr. Comegys as an “engineer” with the State Highway Administration. That may be the official term for his position, but he is not a professional engineer – i.e., licensed as such in Maryland – according to the State website that lists the licensed engineers. He’s just another Maryland state bureaucrat.

Salisbury Needs to Vote on Tuesday

Tomorrow, voters in Salisbury have an opportunity to take the first step in bringing out real change. The choices are simple:
Do you want to continue paying higher property tax rates (or higher rents)?

Do you want Salisbury to continue its current path of bureaucracy run amok?

Do you want Salisbury to continue subsidizing the privilege few at the expense of its citizens?
If you answered no to these questions, then your choices are clear. You need to go to the polls on Tuesday and vote for Bob Caldwell and Jim Ireton for Mayor. If you live in District 1, you need to vote for Tim Chaney and Cynthia Polk for city council. (Remember, there is no District 2 primary. Voters will choose between Muir Boda and Debbie Campbell on April 7.)

Mayor -

Both Bob Caldwell and Jim Ireton represent a clean break from the broken policies of the current administration. Both gentlemen would use tax increases as a last resort rather than the first choice (when politically expedient) to fund city services. Both candidates offer a more thoughtful and fiscally responsible approach to city spending. Both men also represent accountability and transparency versus the current state of city government. Neither candidate would force citizens to file a PIA (public information act) request and pay a fee in order to find out the most mundane information about city government.

With all due respect to candidate Michael Della Penna, the lack of a public record and an issues platform that veers more towards platitude than substance does not warrant thoughtful consideration.

Incumbent councilman Gary Comegys should be a slam dunk for the office of Mayor. With almost six years of experience on council, innate political savvy, and intelligence (DO NOT allow the Bubba remarks to fool you), Comegys has much to offer Salisbury. Unfortunately, his record on council has been one of complete disdain for the city's taxpayers and residents. To the best of my knowledge, Comegys has cast only one vote in opposition to the Mayor's many ill-conceived policies. This one vote was a flip-flop on a water/sewer increase AFTER Councilwomen Campbell and Cohen demonstrated that the city was basing the increase on a fund balance that was almost a year old and grossly inaccurate. Comegys has voted in favor of almost every (if not all) developer subsidy put before him. Comegys pushed for a form of city budgeting that is little more than a series of money pots which can be spent in almost any way the Mayor chooses. Comegys also supports establishment of a CDC (community development corporation) which Mayor Tilghman has already stated would be run by former councilman Mike Dunn, and which would serve as little more than a taxpayer sponsored slush fund to funnel money to selected friends and their pet projects.

It is important for voters to remember that they have two vote for Mayor on Tuesday. They should exercise them both.

Council, District 1 -

District 1 voters have an easy choice on Tuesday. Incumbent Shanie Shields has done little for the citizens of her district since her election. She has, however, been a consistent vote against safe and affordable housing in her district. If landlords issued a report card, Shields would receive an "A" rating. While the North Prong plan will (if brought to fruition) lead to the ultimate displacement of hundreds (possibly thousands) of her constituents, Shields has remained a consistent vote for developers.

Neither Tim Chaney nor Cynthia Polk have a public record to put before the public. However, both represent the chance for change from the current policies of Salisbury government. I apologize for not being better informed on Ms. Polk's position on many key issues. Chaney has a demonstrated record of organizing his community, for the better, while facing stiff opposition and even attacks by the current administration. Chaney has demonstrated the ability, and willingness, to stand up for what is right. It is our hope that Ms. Polk would do the same.

ALMOST All Dressed Up And No Place To Go!

OK, so you taxpayers paid out so much money to the Salisbury Fire Department, guess what? Funds are so tight in the City, the Deputy Fire Chief Gordy got a brand spanking new Police Package Chase Vehicle, dropped it off at the shop to have decals and light package in the many thousands of dollars, YET the Salisbury Police Department is sitting on BRAND NEW CRUISERS and they can't afford to purchase the LIGHT PACKAGES to get them on the street!

Oh, now I know old Chiefy is REALLY PO'd at me for this one but the truth is the truth and these vehicles are sitting until the City, riddled with crime, can somehow find the funding to pay for these light packages and get them onto the streets.

What an embarrassment as a leader of an entire 88 staff Police Force that they can't find the money to better serve the Public. Yeppers, vote for Gary Comegys, who supports the Salisbury Fire Department by the sum of at least $18,000,000.00 in the past 14 months but screw the SPD! Sorry Chief, I truly feel for you and the men and women that serve that Department. This is just unbelievable! That's OK though, right? I mean, at least you can depend on Bill Gordy getting to ANY scene well before your people do!

Will You Please Just Answer My Questions!

I just received a response to my questions about the horrible chemical odor coming from the WWTP weeks ago. It seems the City doesn't want to give any direct answers, so maybe I should just bring this to the attention of the MDE instead?

I received numerous complaints via e-mail and telephone calls referencing this problem. Some of which were a week apart, so the problem wasn't just one day. Nevertheless, I got on PAC14 in front of the Council and I asked, what was the chemical and was the "council" aware there was such a problem.

Recently I spoke with one of the Council Members and they had wondered what the smell was as well because even though they don't live very close to the WWTP, they could smell it too.

My biggest concern is, IF it was chlorine/bleach, could this have been harmful to the Citizens? One of the complaints came via a phone call and quite frankly this person was outraged. They were standing right next to the GOB in the early evening and couldn't believe just how powerful the odor was. They thought there was some kind of serious chemical spill somewhere and wanted to give me the heads up. When I came to learn it did in fact come from the WWTP, (as I had suspected) that same person grew even more angry because nothing had been said about it and no one was warned of the danger.

There was NOTHING said in the Press/MSM, even to this date. However, they want to claim it was coming from a sludge tank. Sorry Folks but some how I don't buy it, seriously. As long as the MDE isn't there and on top of this on a regular basis, there's nothing they can do about it.

I have now been informed that the City is now investing into Chemicals that will stop the odor, so people like me can't complain about it. That doesn't mean many of you won't get cancer from overexposure of such harsh chemicals. Now you'll be exposed to it but you'll be clueless because of the agents they'll be adding to take away the smell.

It's time for some change here in Salisbury. Your next Mayor needs to be accountable for this kind of crap and Comegys IMHO is more of the same. Bob Caldwell and Jim Ireton are your two best choices right now. You have the opportunity to vote for BOTH of them in this Primary, I strongly suggest you do just that. However, YOU need to get off your rear ends and VOTE! No more excuses, unless you're enjoying less services for more taxes?

Lore' you purposely did not answer my questions. I did NOT ask if the Mayor knew. Hell, we all know she wouldn't be accountable anyway, just like their being 99.9% compliant at the WWTP, then came the fines for illegal activity. I never once mentioned the Mayor. I clearly stated and you clearly recognized in bold letters, the City Council. I also asked what chemical it was, you refused to answer that too. Sadly Lore', you're one of them and this letter proves it.

I personally hope the next new Mayor removes Lore' Chambers from her position as well because she clearly can't handle the truth either.

Hispanic Community Wants Ireton For Mayor

Dear Joe,

Iʼve been criticized for not attending most of the mayoral forums. This does not mean I am not involved in our community. My letters to the editor and recent interviews by the DT are a clear signal that I as many other Salisbury citizens and taxpayers am participating in our electoral process while I warn our local government officials that the people of this beautiful city are tired of false campaign promises and expect more honesty from our candidates once they get elected. It is nothing wrong from me or anyone to express our thoughts one way or another. I will continue to be watchdog of our government before and after the electoral process.

I attended the recent Camden Neighborhood Association Mayoral Forum and I was able to corroborate my criticism of the candidates: people want more clear answers from them and no one supports negative campaign. Our politicians should understand that personal attacks are not ethical and unacceptable. However, as a voter, I was pleased with the way Mr. Ireton responded to all the questions, including the one regarding Richard Insley, which in my opinion was unfair and inappropriate. I applauded Mr. Ireton for the professional manner he used to elude the question and for his entire performance in the debate. I cannot say the same about the rest of the candidates. I was disappointed to the personal attacks used by Mr. Comegys, but I was not surprised either. He used this tactic before and perhaps he thought it might be beneficial for him again.

If we the people of Salisbury want a mayor who can professionally deal with all the issues affecting us in the city one way or another, then Jim Ireton is the right person to head our city government. I highly encourage the members of my Hispanic community to vote for Mr. Ireton this coming primary and of course in the upcoming general election. I am looking forwards to help this gentleman get elected our next mayor because out the four contenders, he is the best suited for the job.

TELL LEGISLATORS TO PHASE-OUT ENVIRONMENTAL SURCHARGE

Folks, I am pleased to inform you that I have stirred-up considerable consternation this legislative session among our elected representatives. The light that I have shined on some of their proposed legislation will help to hold them accountable to the electorate.

Now here is one more piece of legislation that warrants your looking at. HB-1407 -Environmental Trust Fund - Environmental Surcharge - Sunset Extension - is a House Bill that is being sponsored to extend the environmental surcharge on each and every one of your electric bills. The current Environmental Surcharge is set to expire next year and this bill would extend that date out until 2015.

Now most of you know that I'm not against protecting our environment, quite the contrary, I'm in a business that promotes green technology.

But what I'm against is using the present collection of Environmental surcharge monies to SUBSIDIZE THE COAL INDUSTRY IN WESTERN MARYLAND. We here on the eastern shore derive no financial benefit from our contributions and thus our money, present being collected, is being funneled out of our jurisdiction.

Contact your legislators now and let them know how you feel. Don't allow the extension of the Environmental surcharge to be extended, unless, some of it is being returned back to our jurisdictions here on the eastern shore.

Women Supporting Women @ Vinny LaRoma's A Blast!

These photos are property of Joe Albero and Salisbury News and cannot be copied or used anywhere else without written consent by me.

The one person having a better time than all of us didn't even have to pay to get in, Vinny! Although the event cost me an arm and a leg, (financially) I couldn't think of a better investment. What can I say, I'm a guy from Da Bronx.

Nevertheless, everyone had a fantastic time and Vinny, (as always) put out a spread to die for! Vinny, UNBELIEVABLE! I ate dinner before we went, (which was stupid) but that didn't stop me from over eating and one thing I have to tell everyone about Vinny's, if you hold an event there, there's always extra food no matter what. You never leave that place thinking, man, I wish they would have had some more food there. The variety was fabulous, the food was fantastic and we will be back.

As for the event itself, the Silent Auction items were well worth bidding on and we personally walked out with three of the items. One was for Outback and the other was a pair of Everlast Boxing Gloves signed by Fernando Guerrero, because Lord knows we couldn't get our hands on a pair of them in our life time. My Wife! That cost us a hundred bucks! Then we bought some beads with flashing LED boobs for another hundred bucks. I gave that away to someone because I knew I couldn't explain them to our Grandson once we got home. LOL

Everyone was dancing throughout the entire night and Terrance from WMDT, well, what can I say, the man can in fact dance! I have two left feet but I did slow dance with the beautiful Stacy Sakai. Hubba, Hubba! We were also surprised by two special guests that were completely unexpected. Jim Perdue and Fernando Guerrero.

There is another event coming up on the 14th of March at the Fountains and that one will be very cool. If you're looking for an excuse to get out and really enjoy yourselves, set March 14th aside and we'll deliver more information on that event very soon.

Comegys Solution To Downtown Plaza, Add More Trash Cans

These photos were taken Sunday evening on the Downtown Plaza. Not only are all of the trash cans overflowing with trash, (as usual) some have simply thrown trash bags onto the side of the road nowhere near the trash cans. Then, I also noticed additional trash cans parked there that are also filled to the rim.

Look Folks, not only has Barrie Tilghman proven she doesn't give a crap about this City, Gary Comegys talked the big talk a few weeks ago claiming the Downtown area was one of his biggest concerns. Are you convinced now?

The man drives around every day in his 4x4 pickup truck and could easily throw some of this trash into the back of his truck and take it to the landfill. Everyone knows the Tilghman Administration and Comegys come to this Site every single day. If they tell you they don't, they're liars.

NOTHING is going to change Folks and you better keep that in mind. However, it's going to take each and every one of you to go out and not only VOTE, you're going to need to make sure every single person you know goes out and votes as well. The ONLY time you should feel comfortable about perhaps not getting to the polls is for the main election. Right now you need to knock Gary Comegys out of the race in this Primary and make a difference for the City, for yourself.

Just like my earlier Post warning you about the viruses on the Anti Albero Blogs, YOU need to get out and do something about it of fall into the same hole you were in for the past 12 years.

Remember, there are many of us sitting on the outside from Delmar, Berlin, Ocean City, Selbyville, Pocomoke, Snow Hill, you name it, we're watching this election. We want to see just how stupid people are in Salisbury. You see, your votes will determine if we'll consider making any more investments into Salisbury or not. If YOU people just don't care, well, neither will we. We can simply invest elsewhere and you'll have to slowly watch your City turn into a Ghost Town and don't think it won't.

That being said, look at the current Investors you have right now in Salisbury. Slumlords! One after the other. They wait till you've had enough and will do anything you can to get the heck out of that City and unload your property so they can rent it out to the next sucker that comes along.

Take back your City and get out there and vote for Ireton/Caldwell. Vote for Chaney/Polk. Make a difference. Mr. Comegys has failed to keep to his word. He could have brought the trash problem up at the last Council Meeting, he didn't. He could have brought it up over the past 2 1/2 years since he and Mike Dunn saw enough of it on this Blog, he didn't. NOTHING is going to change unless YOU change it. We're watching!

Sorry for the photo quality. I wasn't getting out of my vehicle in the rain to get better shots.

FINAL Warning On Anti Albero Blog Site Viruses

I have spoken to several people who have experienced viruses and complete computer shut downs after visiting one of the Anti Albero Blog Sites this past week.

Look, I warned you last week of this problem and this is the last time I'm going to bring it up. Certainly you can visit their Sites but you'll be doing so at your own risk. I heard from one person that he thinks one of the people involved in one of those Sites allegedly runs a computer repair shop locally. IF that is true, isn't that like owning a Glass Repair Shop and running around shooting out car windows to get additional business?

Anyhow, I have removed their links off my computer and refuse to visit them any more. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Just Because Your Tires Are Inflated Doesn't Mean Your Car Will Float

Last week someone found additional parking in the River at the City Park. P-is for PARK. I wonder if the EPA was called in. All that fuel and oil leaking out of this car and into the River, not good! How much money do you want to bet that they didn't make that call, yet they slam Boaters for this all the time.

Can You Believe What You Read? - Part III

Over the past few weeks we've examined this question from several angles.  In Part I we looked at print media, with a special examination of Salisbury's Daily Times.  If there was ever a poster child for the need to read critically (and sceptically), the Daily Times is it.  In Part II we examined the blogosphere.  As expected, there are problems.  However, as we have demonstrated, the print media have a tough time claiming the "moral high ground" (with the exception of a relatively few instances in the blogosphere).

Today we look at radio and television.  More importantly, we need to look within.  Do we want to be informed, or merely affirmed?  If we truly want to be informed, what can we do?
