Perry Camp Denies Leaking Explosive Cain Story

Rick Perry's presidential campaign says it is "absolutely not" responsible for leaking the fact that Herman Cain was accused of sexual misconduct while head of the National Restaurant Association to Politico, which broke the explosive story Sunday night.

"That is false, patently untrue, no one at this campaign was involved in this story," said Perry communications director Ray Sullivan.

Sullivan then suggested to CBS News and National Journal reporter Rebecca Kaplan that Mitt Romney's campaign is behind the allegations.

But according to some passengers on the plane, the landing went so smoothly they didn't realize they were skidding down the runway on the jet's belly.

Gym vs. Genes: How Exercise Trumps Obesity Genes

Our genes may have a lot to do with the way we look and behave, but they certainly don't dictate our destiny. That's true when it comes to our weight too.
Scientists at the Institute of Metabolic Science in the U.K. report in the journal PLoS Medicine that people who are genetically predisposed to obesity can counter the influence of their DNA by doing even moderate amounts of exercise. People in the study weren't marathoners or gym rats; rather, they got about 30 minutes of exercise five days a week by walking the dog, riding their bike to work or tending their gardens.

The Reality Of Redistricting

House Panel to Subpoena Homeland Security for Information on Illegal Immigrants

The House Judiciary Committee, in a rare move, is planning to subpoena the Department of Homeland Security for information about illegal and criminal immigrants whom the department has declined to deport.

A subcommittee on the panel voted 7-4 on Wednesday to authorize the subpoena, which Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, is expected to issue later this week. It would be the first subpoena issued by the committee since it came under GOP control.

Move Your Money: Campaign Grows To Divest From "Too Big To Fail" Banks To Local Banks, Credit Unions

As participants in the Occupy Wall Street movement continue protesting the record profits made by banks bailed out by taxpayer money, a group of grassroots activists are hitting America’s largest banks—including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo—where it hurts most: the wallet. Dubbing this Saturday, Nov. 5 as "Bank Transfer Day," activists are urging people to move their money out of the banks deemed "too big to fail" into local community banks and credit unions. Bank Transfer Day draws on an idea popularized by filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, economist Rob Johnson and columnist Arianna Huffington, among others. In 2010, they created the short film called "Move Your Money," which became a viral sensation. We speak with filmmaker Eugene Jarecki.

Latinos Call For Immigration Reform, Not Record Deportations

New York - In his campaign, President Barack Obama promised to make comprehensive immigration reform a top priority – a pledge mainly directed at Latino voters.

But in his nearly three years in office, his attention has been on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, healthcare reform and the financial crisis, disappointing Latino voters and jeopardising an important source of support for his bid for re-election in 2012.

But the Obama administration has not merely left aside the question of reform.

One of the key demands of Latino rights activists is an end to a controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) programme known as Secure Communities.

Although the aim of the programme is to deport undocumented immigrants who have criminal records, it has led to massive sweeps of immigrants without criminal records.

Researchers Now Presume That Dr Livingstone Lied

(AP)

He is one of history's most famous explorers, and his first-person account of a 19th-century massacre in Africa helped lead to the closure of one of the continent's most notorious slave markets.

Now researchers say they have evidence Dr. David Livingstone may not have been telling the whole truth. An international team of academics used spectral imaging technology to decode Livingstone's long-illegible field diary and say it hints that his own men may have participated in the atrocity.

The Median Net Worth Of A Member Of Congress Is Five Times Higher Than The Median American Household

Part of the reason the richest 1 percent of Americans have captured our politics is because they are able to finance political races, issue campaigns, and lobbyists. But the other reason some of the richest Americans have been able to control our politics is because they themselves have gotten elected to positions of power at a much higher rate than the rest of us.

As Roll Call points out today, the estimated median net worth for a member of Congress in 2010 was $513,000 (this is strictly an estimate as assets are reported in ranges). Meanwhile, the Center for Economic and Policy Research’s David Rosnick points out that the net worth of the median household in the United States that same year was closer to $100,000:
For Congress, the median net worth in 2010 was about $513,000. For regular households, the Federal Reserve Board pegged that number at about $120,000 in 2008, and that number this year is probably around $100,000, [said economist David Rosnick]. While it is hard to make an exact comparison between Congress and the rest of the nation, what is clear is lawmakers “are all a lot richer than anything you would call a typical American,” Rosnick said.
The Center for Responsive Politics looked at the average wealth of members of Congress in between 2004 and 2009 (relying on estimates derived from ranges). In 2009, the average net worth of a senator $13.4 million. On the House side, it was $4.9 million:

Congressional Hearing Sought Over Voter ID Laws Sweeping States

Washington - Does requiring a photo ID to vote return America to the days when poll taxes and literacy tests made it hard for minorities to cast ballots? Are state lawmakers trying to make it harder for people to vote?

Two top House Judiciary Committee Democrats want to know, and on Monday they asked Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, to hold hearings on those laws, which have been adopted or are pending in 37 states.

The chairman is reviewing the request, and he had no immediate comment.

"As voting rights experts have noted, the recent stream of laws passed at the state level are a reversal of policies, both federal and state, that were intended to combat voter disenfranchisement and boost voter participation," said Reps. John Conyers, D-Mich., and Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.

Conyers is the committee's top Democrat. Nadler is the top Democrat on its Constitution subcommittee.
They're concerned about new laws in 13 states that they say will curb access to the ballot box.

Conservative "Reverse Robin Hood" Tax Plans

Institute for America's Future co-director Robert Borosage appeared on the Tavis Smiley Show on October 31 to discuss the tax and economic policies advanced by Republican presidential candidates and their impact on middle- and low-income people.

He calls the flat-tax proposals of candidates Rick Perry and Herman Cain, as well as the regressive tax changes offered by candidate Mitt Romney, "reverse Robin Hood plans" that take from the poor in terms of reduced government services and higher taxes, and give to the rich in the form of a lower overall tax burden. These plans come "at a time in which we're seeing extreme inequality and concentrated wealth we haven't seen since before the Great Depression."

The flat-tax plans are particularly egregious, Borosage tells Smiley. In the case of Perry, his plan "eliminates taxes on wealth" and slashes government revenues by $5 trillion over 10 years, a deficit that has to be made up by a 25 percent cut in government spending, including "deep cuts in the basic promises we make to working Americans about their retirement."

Cain's plan "is the worst," Borosage says, because it would among other things impose a 9 percent national sales tax on top of the state and local taxes people pay on consumer goods. Because the lower the income a person makes the higher the percentage of that income is devoted to spending on consumer items, that means the Cain plan would fall the hardest on low-income and middle-income people.

Senators Introduce Constitutional Amendment To Overturn Citizens United

One of the overarching themes of the 99 Percent Movement is that our democracy is too corrupted by corporate special interests. This corruption was worsened last year by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which allowed for huge new unregulated flows of corporate political spending.

Yesterday, six Democratic senators — Tom Udall (NM), Michael Bennett (CO), Tom Harkin (IA), Dick Durbin (IL), Chuck Schumer (NY), Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), and Jeff Merkeley (OR) — introduced a constitutional amendment that would effectively overturn the Citizens United case and restore the ability of Congress to properly regulate the campaign finance system.

A Comment Worthy Of A Post 11-2-11

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Another Game Backfires On Anti Albero Bloggers":

We picked up pellets last Friday from Delmarva wood pellets. I have to say these are the best pellets we have ever gotten in the 3 years we have had our stove. Last year we had just gotten our pellets elsewhere and then they advertised on this site. I have tried every pellet around in our stove and while some burn ok most of them leave hard clinkers in the bottom. The pellets we just got do not do that at all. They do not burn as fast, nor do they create a lot of ash and they do not clump in the bottom. I'm a happy warm camper. Thanks Joe and thanks to the guys at Delmarva Wood Pellets for providing a great product and being so nice.

Drug Terms Reduced, Freeing Prisoners

There are some big meals on the way for Darryl Flood.

Mr. Flood, who has served 10 years in prison over crimes involving crack cocaine, had been scheduled for release in 2013. Under new sentencing rules that came into effect on Tuesday, however, he is one of more than 1,800 prisoners eligible for release right away.

Mr. Flood, like tens of thousands of other prisoners, had received a far tougher sentence for a crime involving crack cocaine than he would have if the drug had been in powdered form — a disparity commonly referred to as 100 times greater for crack than for powder
.
Mr. Flood’s sister, Susan Cardwell, said in an interview that Mr. Flood was scheduled for release from prison in Ashland, Ky. on Tuesday night, and would board an overnight bus to rejoin the family in Virginia. “He told me he wanted me to send him $30 for the bus ride so he could eat on the way home — anything he wanted,” she said. “After jail food for so long,” she added, she expected their first stop would be an all-you-can-eat buffet.

At the time the law was passed in the 1980s, cocaine use and crime associated with it were skyrocketing.
Marc Mauer, the executive director of the Sentencing Project in Washington, said that the much of the spike had to do with initial turf wars as the drug hit the streets. Thousands of nonviolent criminals ended up with sentences that have long been criticized as extreme, and the disparity was increasingly viewed as racially tinged.

Congress addressed the issue by passing the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010, which reduced the sentencing disparity to 18 to 1. In June, the United States Sentencing Commission voted to apply the guidelines retroactively, with the new policy going into effect on Monday this week.

Over time, some 12,000 inmates could have their sentences, which average 13 years, shortened by an average of three years. Mr. Mauer noted that this still left “substantial” penalties for the crimes. “We’re not talking about a slap on the wrist here,” he said.

November 17th Is The 36th Great American Smokeout

The American Cancer Society is marking the 36th Great American Smokeout on November 17 by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk.

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet more than 46 million Americans still smoke. However, more than half of these smokers have attempted to quit for at least one day in the past year.

Cain Sings!

Herman Cain may be the only presidential candidate in history to actually benefit from a sex scandal.

Just hours after Politico broke a story about accusations of sexual harassment against Cain, the former Godfather's Pizza CEO killed it during a luncheon speech at the National Press Club. And then to top it all off, he SANG.

After very little prompting to reprise his "Imagine There's No Pizza" performance at the Omaha Press Club, Cain launched into a surprisingly beautiful rendition of the hymn "He Looked Beyond My Faults" — an interesting choice given the sex scandal.

The Supercommittee That Really Runs America - Presenting The November 1 TBAC Minutes

With Tim Geithner having proven repeatedly and beyond a reasonable doubt he has insurmountable intellectual challenges, many have wondered just who it is that makes the real decisions at the US Treasury? The answer is, The Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee [24], or the TBAC in short, chaired by JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, which meets every quarter, and in which the richest people in America (here is its composition [25]) set the fate of the US for the next 3 months in the form of a very much irrelevant report to TurboTax (link [26]). What is of huge importance, however, are the minutes, which unlike the FOMC, are released immediately following the meeting. Below are the full minutes from the latest TBAC meeting held yesterday, just released by the US Treasury (and yes, the issuance of FRN Treasurys, corporate cash hoarding as well as the resumption of the SFP program are both discussed - like we said: these guys run the world) as well as the critical associated powerpoint.

ADP Number Confirms Relentless Erosion In US Manufacturing Base

The October ADP Private Payrolls report, which is the butt of all jokes when it comes to accurate NFP predictive ability, has come and gone, printing at 110K on expectations of 100K, and down from a revised 116K in September. For those who actually care about the quality of jobs, services added 114K of the total 110K jobs, while good-producing jobs subtracted 4K, and manufacturing jobs as a subset declined by 8K. And then they complain that China is making everything in the world...

From the report: "Today’s ADP National Employment Report suggests that the recent trend in private employment remains moderate, and probably is below a pace consistent with a stable unemployment rate. This rate of moderate job creation reflects the sluggish pace of GDP growth exhibited earlier this year. Employment in the private, service-providing sector rose 114,000 in October. Although down a bit from an increase of 122,000 in September, this increase marks more than 20 consecutive months of employment gains. Employment in the private, goods-producing sector declined 4,000 in October, while manufacturing employment declined by 8,000." Somehow growth came from small and medium businesses, while large payrolls declined: "Employment on small payrolls—those with up to 49 workers—rose 58,000 in October, down from the 64,000 jobs created among small businesses last month. Employment on medium payrolls—those with 50 to 499 workers—rose 53,000, and employment on large payrolls—those with 500 or more workers—declined 1,000." As for the fulcrum construction and financial sevices jobs, "Employment in the construction industry fell 1,000 in October, bringing the total decrease in construction employment since its peak in January 2007 to 2,131,000. Employment in the financial services sector rose a scant 1,000 in October."

Be Prepared To Get A Real Ticket

Over the past 30 days Wicomico Coounty/Salisbury has been sending out warnings to those people exceeding 12 miles per hour over the posted speed limit in school zones. That's all about to change.

Starting this week, (FRIDAY) the warnings will end and the real tickets begin. Anyone, (from this point forward) who speeds in a school zone is just a fool and will get what they deserve.

Sex Offender Released From Jail

A mentally challenged sex offender who spent two nights in jail for soliciting sex from a young girl on Facebook last year, only to then get locked up for violating probation by luring another minor over the Internet, was released to his parents' custody Monday.

Brian David Wyninger, 30, of Gambrills, admitted to Circuit Judge Paul A. Hackner yesterday that he violated his probation by sending a handwritten letter to a minor girl in April.

Wyninger, who has the mental capacity of a 10-year-old, faced the possible imposition of the remainder of his sentence: about nine months in prison.

A Letter To The Editor 11-2-11

Mr. Albero,

I read on sbynews last week that there were repairs being done to the Plaza … have they been completed?  Please tell me they have fixed the fountain at Division and West Main?

And thanks for continuing to cover  Delmarva as you do; Being 2 hours away from home, I see no reason to rely on WBOC or WMDT anymore when I get all the information (and the occasionaly lol moment) from sbynews.

Thanks!

Washington Post Discards All Journalistic Standards In Attack On Social Security

News outlets generally like to claim a separation between their editorial pages and their news pages. The Washington Post has long ignored this distinction in pursuing its agenda for cutting Social Security, however it took a big step further in tearing down this barrier with a lead front page story that would have been excluded from most opinion pages because of all the inaccuracies it contained.

The basic premise of the story, as expressed in the headline ("the debt fallout: how Social Security went 'cash negative' earlier than expected") and the first paragraph ("Last year, as a debate over the runaway national debt gathered steam in Washington, Social Security passed a treacherous milestone. It went 'cash negative.'") is that Social Security faces some sort of crisis because it is paying out more in benefits than it collects in taxes. [The "runaway national debt" is also a Washington Post invention. The deficits have soared in recent years because of the economic downturn following the collapse of the housing bubble. No responsible newspaper would discuss this as problem of the budget as opposed to a problem with a horribly underemployed economy.]

This "treacherous milestone" is entirely the Post's invention, it has absolutely nothing to do with the law that governs Social Security benefit payments. Under the law, as long as there is money in the trust fund, then Social Security is able to pay full benefits. There is literally no other possible interpretation of the law.

As the article notes, the trust fund currently holds $2.6 trillion in government bonds, so it is nowhere close to being unable to pay benefits. The whole point of building up the trust fund was to help cover costs at a future date when taxes would not be sufficient to cover full benefits. Rather than posing any sort of crisis, this is exactly what had been planned when Congress last made major changes to the program in 1983 based on the recommendations of the Greenspan commission.

The article makes great efforts to confuse readers about the status of the trust fund. It tells readers:

Another Game Backfires On Anti Albero Bloggers

Not long ago I received an e-mail from a company interested in advertising with Salisbury News. We replied back with the information and they immediately responded stating they would like to go forward with the ad and included the artwork to do so.

After sending them an invoice I received an interesting call from the owner of the company asking what the invoice was for. I told them it was for the advertising on Salisbury News. It became instantly clear that they had no clue what I was talking about. I went back to the original e-mail and read back the e-mail address and they said, that's not me.

I went on to explain who we were and what we do. They were kind enough to hear me out and I assured them that there would be no charge for the ad and if they'd like they could tear up the invoice. Their response was, let me go take a look at your Site and get back with you.

Today we received confirmation that they would like to stay on board.

So you see Folks, Good Things Happen To Good People. We work extremely hard every day doing what we do. Many have tried this Blogging thing and many have failed. Certainly no one has achieved the volume of traffic and comments that Salisbury News delivers, not even the local MSM.

If you would like to become a part of our Family of advertisers, contact me at alberobutzo@wmconnect.com and take a chance for $100.00 a month. There's no contracts binding you to a long term agreement. There's no strings, just positive results for your money. And if we can't deliver, cancel your ad, it's as simple as that. We appreciate your business and will do all we can to get you the best advertising results your hard earned money can buy.

New Bill in Congress Could Turn Alternative Media Outlets And YouTube Singers Into Felons

SB 978 is just one more bullet in a broader government effort to end the web as we know it.

In June, Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., introduced SB 978, specifically “to amend the criminal penalty provision for criminal infringement of a copyright, and for other purposes.”

In lay terms, it’s the “illegal streaming bill,” and it would essentially make the streaming of any copyrighted material on the Internet a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. On paper, it sounds innocuous—copyrighted material and the Internet have a contentious history, and efforts to curb piracy have conflicted with the concept of the Internet as a free exchange for information. But SB 978 is a sweeping curtailing of Internet rights under the guise of hindering piracy, and just one more bullet in a broader government effort to end the web as we know it, and snip away at the First Amendment.

Worse is the potential of SB 978 to prosecute those individuals uploading YouTube videos. This will not simply target those people uploading full movies there or to other video streaming sites. It could also be used to curb individual musicians who upload their cover versions of copyrighted songs, a tradition that practically made YouTube what it is today. The nonprofit Fight for the Future is particularly concerned with this aspect, and has launched a campaign called “Free Bieber,” using the example of Justin Bieber’s rise to fame as a way to get out the message. (Ironically, Bieber’s camp has issued a cease-and-desist over using his name in the campaign.)

The implications are far broader than a Bieber, though. When Rufus Wainwright and Sean Lennon covered Madonna’s “Material Girl” at Occupy Wall Street, if someone had uploaded a video of the performance to YouTube, Madonna (or whomever owns her music) could sue the uploader if it’s deemed a “public performance.” Reports the Internet advocacy group Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF):

PINK GOLD

Potash is the residue from left over from smoking a marijuana cigarette. Just kidding. This is not an article about drugs.

Potash, aka Pink Gold, is one of the key ingredients in the inorganic fertilizers that enables America to grow massive amounts of various crops and be the largest exporter of food in the world. It is a potassium compound.

There are three essential ingredients, all extracted from the Earth, in the fertilizer used to grow crops commercially. Nitrogen, extracted mostly from natural gas, phosphorus, and potash. Because of the high cost of domestic natural gas, the U.S. imports nitrogen, but this could, and should, change because of the recent discoveries of massive natural gas deposits in the Northeast. We have plenty of of phosphate deposits and export 50% of what we produce. So that’s no problem. But all three ingredients are critical for commercial farming, AND THERE ARE NO SUBSTITUTES. None, including the so-called organic alternatives, which have less nutrients and are more expensive, bulky, and subject to carrying and spreading pathogens. Of the three, potash makes up to 60% of the content of commercial farming fertilizer.

How US Banks Are Lying About Their European Exposure; Or How Bilateral Netting Ends With A Bang, Not A Whimper

A little over a month ago, Zero Hedge started an avalanche [38]in the financial sector, and an unprecedented defense thereof by the "independent" financial media and conflicted sell side, by being simply the messenger in pointing out that the gross exposure of one Morgan Stanley to the French banking sector is $39 billion [39]. The firestorm of protests, which naturally focused on the messenger, and not the message, attempted to refute the claims that Morgan Stanley (and many others) are overexposed to Europe (both banks and countries) by stating that gross is not net, and that when one nets out "hedges" the real exposure is far, far lower. The logic is that bilateral netting, as the principle behind this argument is called, should always work - no matter the market, and that counterparty risk, especially when it comes to hedges, should always be ignored because banks will always honor their own derivative exposure. Obviously that this failed massively when AIG had to be bailed out, to preserve precisely the tortured and failed logic of bilateral netting was completely ignored, after all things will never get that bad again, right? Well, wrong. Because the argument here is precisely what the exposure is when the chain of netting breaks, when one or more counterparties go under (such as MF Global for example, which filed bankruptcy precisely due to its hedged (?) European exposure - luckily MF was not in the business of writing CDS on European banks or else all hell would be breaking loose right now). So little by little the story was forgotten: after all when everyone says gross is not net, contrary to what history shows us all too often, everyone must be right. Today it is time to refresh this story, as none other than Bloomberg pulls the scab right off and while confirming our observations, also goes further: yes, banks are not only massively exposed to Europe, but they are in essence misrepresenting this exposure to the public by a factor of well over ten!

Bloomberg [40]begins with some simple math: the concept that is seemingly most disturbing to the status quo, not only in Europe, but now in the US as well.

Meet Bubba

The admission is here:
  • MF Global Admits Using Client Money, AP Says
  • MF exec. made the admission in phone call with regulators Monday morning
It's time to get some expert on the ex-MF Global head's mental state and to blame temporary insanity, otherwise, someone is going to be bunking with Bubba very shortly.
From AP:
A federal official says MF Global, the securities firm led by Jon Corzine, admitted to using clients' money as its financial troubles mounted.

An MF Global executive admitted that to federal regulators in a phone call early Monday after regulators discovered money missing from clients' accounts, according to an official familiar with the conversation.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss a preliminary investigation by federal regulators.

Government rules require securities firms to keep clients' money and company money in separate accounts. Violating them could result in civil penalties.

MF Global, which filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday, faced a cash crunch following multibillion-dollar bets on European sovereign debt.

Corzine ran Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and later was governor of New Jersey.

Jobs Panel Member Whose Solar Firm Won Loan Guarantees Raises 'Conflict Of Interest' Concerns

A clean-energy firm led by a member of President Obama's jobs council has a stake in projects that have reaped nearly $2 billion in loan guarantees from Washington, a case that has raised conflict-of-interest concerns as the same jobs council pushes for more "government-backed" investment in renewable energy.

The company, NextEra Energy, secured a loan guarantee in August for a solar project in California. An affiliate has taken over another California project that won a separate guarantee in September. The firm is no lightweight -- NextEra Energy Resources, the subsidiary working on both solar projects, is the biggest producer of wind and solar energy on the continent.
